Gentling exercises should he done with your puppy everyday. These can also be done on adult dogs. The following are exercises from our resident trainer, Patti Samiec, that are meant for your dog to learn to respect and trust you:
- Sitting on the floor, put your dog in your lap. Putting your arm
under his head and your other arm around his belly, hold him close and tight to the count of five. They may not like this at first, but don't
give in. Praise them when finished.
- Starting at the top of their head, heavily pet him going all the way down his back including the tail (stubby). The petting should he done heavier than normal. This is teaching dominance.
- Touch all four paws by starting at the
top and going all the way down the leg to the paw itself and in
hetween the pads. Lift the lip and

open and close the mouth. You
should also open and close his eyes and rub the ears by starting on the inside and moving outward.
- Another exercise requires you to hold the muzzle. The palm of your hand should be under the mouth and your thumb and fingers should
meet at the top. Taking your thumb rub the muzzle in the direction of the whiskers. This should be done loosely, but where you still have
control.
- This last gentling exercise we call
'budda belly'. Turn you puppy over and rub his belly. Keep in mind
that this is a very submissive position for him to be in, so he
might not like it at first.
Please remember to always praise your dog after each exercise when they do good. Also, if they were to try and bite or squirm during any of these exercises do a muzzle correction until he submits which is when the tongue comes out and licks the top of his nose. Doing these everyday, will make a great pet. |
