| It is believed that cats and dogs can not
be companions and live peacefully in a household. This is not always true. Our resident trainer, Patti Samiec, explains below how important the introduction between the animals is and how it should
be done. One of the standard questions we receive is how to introduce my new dog to the cat. First when bringing the dog home, put the cat in a separate room where the dog cannot get to it. After the dog seems to be adjusting to your household (a day or two later) let the dog sniff the area where the cat is. This is so they get used to each other's smell. If the dog is being crated at night or when left home alone, let the cat have the run of the house. |
This way the dog will see the cat and become used to it running around. If all seems okay, no jumping, leaping or barking at the cat, then put the dog on a leash (where you have total control over the dog) and let the dog sniff the cat. If he growls or snaps correct him immediately with a firm no or a muzzle correction. Do this for about a week or until both animals feel comfortable. Gradually let the cat mingle with the dog making sure the dog is on a leash or you have control. Eventually they will get used to one another. Remember, DO NOT rush things. This introduction is a gradual process so both animals can become comfortable together. This may take a few weeks to a month, so have patience! |
