"We Can no longer take care of our pet." This is the number one reason why an animal is given up. No further explanation required. If pressed for more information, it will usually come out that the owner cannot, for whatever reason, afford vet care.
We all know how important it is for your animal to go to the vet for its annual checkup, vaccinations, heartworm testing and heartworm preventative. Depending on the size/weight of your pet you know that an average of $100.00 will be spent before you walk out the door. Rottie owners know that heartworm preventative alone will be at least $50.00. If you have more than one animal this will mean a larger piece will be taken out of your budget. There can be some relief in sight. PET INSURANCE. An old idea that has been revamped and reappearing on the market. There are a variety of plans now available to the consumer at affordable costs. Many employers are even providing this optional benefit to their employees.
In a search through the internet we have found four different companies that are providing these plans. Three of them are insurance companies and one is a discount program. For the insurance companies, you pay your vet and then after filing the appropriate claim forms you are directly

reimbursed at a predetermined percentage. Some do allow your reimbursement to be made to the vet. Pet Assure is a discount program. If you choose this plan you must make sure that your vet is one of their vets. They also have a program available for discounts on other services outside of veterinary care.
As in any health insurance plan make sure you read the fine print, especially the services that are not covered or requirements for preexisting illnesses.
