AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION

There was an incident that was brought to our attention in which a small child tried to take a bone away from their dog. It did not go well. Pet owners must realize that no matter how much you love and treat your pet as a family member it is still an animal. Small children are on a dogs level, they do not have the ability to comprehend how to discipline the pet. Children must be taught to respect the dog and its toys as well a the pet respecting the child and their toys. This is extremely important, by not teaching this a disastrous situation can happen needlessly. Any dog will protect their food, toys, bones etc. Not just large breeds ~ any size. Never leave a small child unattended with a dog. If you want your dog to have a nylabone or a toy put him in another room away from the kids until both can learn to respect one another. We are firm believers that children and dogs can be great companions for one another, but you have to teach them. If you are willing to do that then they can have a happy relationship. We recently received word from one of our adopters that his beloved Recycled Rott was shot and killed by the local police. The dog had gotten out of the yard, probably a result of a neghborhood youth opening the gate. The dog had not been outside long and had only made its way to the front of the house. The police had already been called, though, and assuming the dog was dangerous, shot the animal as he approached the officer. The family was home at the time and not realizing what had happened, looked out to see what the commotion was. It was then they realized that it was their dog that was shot.
This is the type of call we hate receiving. Please, everyone take this as a warning. Check your gates, make sure you have locks on each and every one of them. When outside always keep your pets in your sight. As hard as we try to educate the public as to the true gentle nature of rotties, they are not easily convinced. There are still far to many dogs out there that have not been properly trained and it is not hard to understand why no one is going to risk getting bit. We always say this won't happen to us, but it can, and, even though precautions were taken, it did.
