KEEP YOUR ROTTWEILER SAFE
& HAPPY THIS SUMMER

The following are some tips to help keep your pet safe and comfortable this summer.

  • Keep ID tags on all pets at all times!
  • Be careful with pesticides and fertilizers. Keep pets off the lawn for several hours after using. Make sure to wipe off their feet in case they lick.
  • Transport your pets safely! Millions of dogs die each year as a result of car accidents. Look for car harnesses at your local pet store that will keep dogs secure in the back seat. You should never let your dog stick his head out of the car window.
  • DO NOT EVER leave your pets in a parked car during the warm months. Pets can easily become overheated and even die when left in the car for even a few minutes. Not to mention your dog can easily be stolen from your car.
  • Padlock your gates. Many dogs accidentally get out of the yard because someone, usually kids (not always yours) or the utilities person failed to properly secure the gate.
  • Safety with kids. Don't allow kids to run around with the dogs in your yard. This only encourages the dog to grab and knock down. Some dogs play too aggressively and may bite.

  • Do not leave your pet outside unattended. Keep an eye on your pet when outside. Make sure there is water available and remem/ber that dark-coated dogs have trouble with the heat.
  • Know when to quit. Many pets love playing Frisbee, or fetch, so much that they will continue to the point of exhaustion. It is up to you to use good judgement and decide when play should stop.

The following are the signs of heat exhaustion:

  • Excessive panting.

  • The skin on the inside of the ears becomes flushed and red.

Heat exhaustion quickly deteriorates into heat stroke, with signs of:

  • Weakness

  • Walk becomes wobbly

  • Fainting/loss of consciousness.

If your pet shows any of the above symptoms, your quick action could save his life. Cool him down as fast as possible-don't wait to get to the vet. Those few minutes could mean the difference between life and death.
